A rainy day puts our work on hold, but creates an opportunity for you to check your roof for any active leaks and make sure your drainage system (gutters) are working for you and not against you!

Here is a check-list of common inspection points and quick tips you can do to check your roofing and gutter system for proper operation during those rainy days!

Roof Leak Check:

• Scan the ceiling of the top floor in your home for any moisture stains. A flashlight works well to help see suttle stains. Check around your bathroom vents as these often tie in directly to your roofing system.

• Take a quick peak in your attic! Use a flashlight to scan around any penetrations (attic vents, plumbing pipes, anything that exists through the roof).

• Take a look at the valleys within the attic. These areas take on a lot of water and is a key point of inspection.

• Take a look at the ridge (The top of the roof structure where the rafters join together). This area is often cut for ventilation and is a common leak area if done incorrectly.

  Gutter System Check:

• Look out the window, or porch, and make sure water isn't flowing over the gutters. This is a sign that your gutters may be full of debris and need cleaning.

• Make sure water isn't flowing between the gutter and fascia. This is a sign that the gutter is not secured to the fascia and a gap exists.

• Look at the terminating end of the downspouts. Is water flowing? If not, this could be a sign that the gutter isn't pitched towards the downspout with a proper slope for drainage.

• Do the downspouts take water away from your home? If water is flowing back towards your home, this can cause damage to your foundation and elevate crawlspace moisture levels. A simple fix can prevent costly foundation repairs!
